Legal Cultures Meet - Sri Lankan Lawyers Annual Dinners in Melbourne, Australia (1990 and 1991)
A notable series of Annual Dinners of Lawyers of Sri Lankan origin were held in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia beginning in the early 1990s to provide opportunities for better social interaction and meeting of legal cultures.
These well attended Dinners were given wide publicity in the Australian Law News and Law Institute Journal of Victoria.
Some of the Guest Speakers at these functions included Justice Richard McGarvie of the Supreme Court of Victoria (and later Governor of Victoria), Judge Christie Weeramantry of the International Court of Justice who spoke on the ' The Role of the ICJ in the Nineteen Nineties', Mr. Nimal Wickremanayake, QC, Mr. David Harper, QC then President of the Bar Council of Victoria ( and now a Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria), Dr. Kumar Amarasekera (Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, Monash University and now deceased) among others.
These Dinners were organised by the joint efforts of Mrs. Pushpa Hettiarachi and Mr. Senaka Weeraratna, who acted as Jt. convenors of the Dinners and also spoke at these Dinners.
